(Daniel 1:8)

The Lord has a word for us today and I believe that the word is that we have defiled ourselves with the "king's meat and wine". Many of us ask the Lord to use us mightily, enable us to move more powerfully in our giftings and callings, speak to us more clearly, and on and on. But the Lord would say to us again that we have defiled ourselves with the "kings meat and wine".

We look at individuals in the bible and wonder, "how in the world were they able to be used so mightily by the Lord". Yes, it was by the Grace of God that individuals in the Word were used so magnificently. But I would say to you that these people also made a conscious choice in their mind that serving God was the most important thing to them. These people did not defile themselves with the "kings meat and wine".

The Lord gave me this phrase while I was studying the life of the prophet Daniel. Although the phrase is not exactly as I say it, it is nevertheless there in Daniel 1:8. The bible says of Daniel in chapter one verse eight that " Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank....".

The "kings meat and wine" which I'm speaking of for us is the things that this world offers to us that does not edify us in the spirit. This is not about a list of rules and regulations, but about putting aside the things that are lawful for us but do not edify us. The apostle Paul said in I Corinthians 6:12 "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any." Paul said again in I Corinthians 10:23 " All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." He also said in Ephesians 4:1 "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called."

God had incredible plans for Daniel (Belteshazzar), Hananiah (Shadrach), Mischael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego). But for these plans to come to fruition these four young boys had a choice to make. The choices for them are not unlike the choices that have been placed before us. In order to honor God and be involved, to the utmost degree of usefulness, they had to choose not to defile themselves.

King Nebuchadnezzar was a smart man. When he conquered Jerusalem he commanded that the very best children of the land be brought to Babylon. He would then slowly and methodically brainwash them and re-educate them and cause them to be conformed to the image of a Babylonian. This process would be slow and insidious. It would be a process that would continue over the course of three years (Daniel 1:5). He would do it slow so as to slowly lull them into submission. But Daniel saw through all of this immediately. The kings objective was to take someone from another kingdom and make them like those in his kingdom. Daniel could have very well said to God, "Lord, here is an opportunity for me to get into the kings court and really make a difference for the people of Israel. I need only eat his food and drink his wine. I know it's not exactly lawful but it is such a small thing to eat and drink what they want me to, and just think of all of the good that I can do for you if I just acquiesce in this small thing". But that was not the mind set of this young Hebrew boy. He knew the law and what it required. He knew what was and was not lawful for him to eat (Leviticus 11). He was not going to break the law of God. And for this God granted him favor with the prince of the eunuchs and with the emperor himself. And God enabled him with the ability to move in his calling most powerfully.

This sounds incredibly familiar to me. The prince of this world takes the best and finest in the land, those called by the Lord Jesus, and tries to re-educate them and cause them to become conformed to the image of his kingdom. He does this in the same way that he caused Nebuchadnezaar to do it in his day. It is an insidious process. He causes us to slowly begin to eat and drink of the "kings meat and wine". Initially it is things that for the most part seem rather innocuous but as we partake of these things we begin to be more fit for his court than for the Lord's court.

The Lord has called us to a "holy priesthood" (I Peter 2:5). Because of this calling that the Lord has placed on us we should not defile ourselves with things of death or things that relate to death. In this I am not saying that ministers should not do funerals or we can not touch those that have passed away. But I would say that we are not to touch those things that have to do with death to our spirit and our relationship to and with our Lord. These things that I speak of are sin. These things are "the unfruitful works of darkness." You want a list of rules and regulations so that you don’t have to listen to the Spirit speaking. But the Lord would say that one of the reasons that He does not use lists of rules and regulations is so that you and I would be forced to listen to Him and have a living and ongoing relationship with Him in order to get the commandments that He wishes to be written on our HEARTS, not parchment or stone. We are in a time in the Church where everything is relative and darkness is called light, lies are called truth, evil is called good. Wake up, you are defiling yourself and having "fellowship with the works of darkness" and asking the Lord to bless it. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! The Lord is going to quickly bring judgment to His house and purify it (Malachi 3:2 and I Peter 4:17) and at the end of that time what will become of you. We for too long now have wanted to live in comfort and ease but the two previously mentioned verses should put the fear of God in us. Those that are submitting to His purifying work He will use in this next work that He is bringing to pass. Those that are stiff-necked and will not be purified will be passed over. Do you want to be used by the Lord? If so I would highly suggest that you heed this word.

If you will remember the Aaronic priesthood were not allowed to defile themselves with any dead thing and this included people. The only people that the priests could touch or go near that were dead were the nearest of those kin to him. These individuals would include ONLY his mother, father, his son, his daughter, and his brother. He was also able to go to his dead sister if she was a virgin and had no husband. But the high priest could not defile himself with any dead thing. Not even his mother or father. Leviticus 21:10 and 11 says "And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes; Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother." The Lord would say to you this day that He has poured the anointing oil of the Holy Ghost (I John 2:27) on you. You were to be consecrated to Him once you put on Christ (Ephesians 4:24). You are to keep your head covered by "casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and brining into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ", by so doing your thoughts (head) is covered, keeping it pure for the Lord alone. "Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil", this is the desire of the Lord, rent hearts not clothes. He desires hearts fully toward Him, not mere lip service. Many will read these words and scoff, though I hope I am wrong, and will continue on in death and wonder why their life is not as productive in the Lord as His word promises that it could and should be. My job in the Lord at this moment is to help you understand one of the reasons. If you are willfully participating in sin (death) you are killing off your ability to give life.

We are to reach out to the lost and dying world but we as a "holy priesthood" are not to touch (participate) in death (sin, and works of darkness). Some of you will say that there is nothing wrong with this or that thing that I do or that thing that I watch or that thing that I listen to. That is fine but the Lord would say to you that to the degree that you touch death to that degree you lose your ability to give life. And if you continue you will be useless. Do not mock the Lord, He has spoken to your heart and you know very well what He has said for you to do and what you should not be doing. You think that he doesn’t see you in your home alone at night filling you mind with death. You think that he doesn’t see you when you go somewhere that you shouldn’t be going and take part in death. The Lord would remind you: "... all things are naked and open unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do" (Hebrews 4:13). You think that it is a small thing for you to continue on in your daily dealings without stopping to be with Him when he calls to you.

Don’t you see that this is how the prince of this world defiles you and makes you more fit for his court and more unfit for the court of our King. You like Daniel must purpose in your heart that you will not defile yourself with the kings meat and wine.

The Lord gave me a dream last week (12/12/96). In this dream I was sitting in the parking lot in front of what looked like a community center of some sort. I was listening to a song on a tape by a Christian singer. I had the door open to the vehicle in which I was sitting. While I was sitting there a van pulled up next to me and driving the van was a member of my church’s tambourine team and in the rear of the van were a few more members of this team. The driver’s side of the van had a rear sliding door that slid open and one of the ladies made a comment about the music to which I was listening. Immediately after the comment I was inside of the community center. My wife and I were sitting in a room full of people. We were sitting side by side in matching recliners. There was a stage at the front of the community center and women were stripping in front of the audience and us. I remember the crowd cheering them on and how sad and hollow I felt with this taking place. All of a sudden the tambourine group came in and one of the ladies sat down at the piano and the others went to the back of the room. The lady at the piano started playing a very up beat song (I can’t remember what song it was). Part of the crowd started booing and making fun of her, the strippers got mad and left the stage in a huff. At this point myself, the tambourine team, and a few others started to sing this song. I remember as I sung that I was somehow watching myself from outside of myself. I began to raise my hands and worship the Lord. But to my dismay my wife seemed to be upset also about this singing and disruption of the previous goings-on. Instantly my wife and I were in a back room of this place. She was sitting on a bed and I knelt down in front of her. We were small talking with one another and then I asked her if she was leaving me. She said "Oh, I don’t know". I asked her "what about the Lord and all that we have shared together about him". She said "it’s just so hard. I don’t know what I’m going to do." At that moment I knew in my heart that I had lost her and she was leaving me. Even though this was just a dream, when I awoke I was still scared. It took me a couple of days before I would even tell my wife about it. The Lord showed me at least part of what this dream meant. This whole dream is about the church as a whole. Parts of the church have their eyes on things that have nothing to do with moving the Kingdom forward. When those that do want to move the Kingdom come along the others get mad with what they are doing. The church is even involved in things that are very gross and destructive. There are things that have taken the people’s eyes off of the Lord and His purpose. There are even those that get violently upset when what they are doing is questioned or challenged. As these people started worshipping and praising and lifting their hands it was real and from the heart. The others were in the midst of the worshipping but their hearts were on other things, they were there in body but their hearts were far away. The picture of me talking with my wife was like the Lord talking to His bride. He is asking His bride if she is going to stay but she is ever-increasingly leaving in her heart. But notice that in the dream I did not struggle with my wife, nor is the Lord going to struggle and wrestle His bride into submission. He will call to her but if her HEART is set to leave He will let her (Genesis 6:3).

The Lord is going to use those that are His IN THEIR HEART and those that are truly in love with Him and have sought to remain undefiled by the meat and wine of the prince of this world. He is making us ready for what he is going to do in these last days.

Today is the day for deep repentance. The Lord Jesus has work that is to be done, much work. He is raising up a new breed of Christians. The type that will not be defiled by the world that they have been called into. For those of you who think that this sounds neat and is a new thing that you would like to get in on, the Lord wants you to know what you can expect: "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it" (Matt 10: 32-39). Jesus is not saying here that we are to look for ways to cause our family to dislike us. But He is saying that when He calls you to do or not to do, or go or not to go somewhere they may not be in agreement. If they are that is all the better, if they are not you must maintain your obedience anyway. This may cause misunderstandings and even hard feelings which quite possibly could divide the family. It is certainly not the Lord’s will that there be division in the family, but if you are called by the Lord it is your responsibility to obey and follow His leading. The reason that the Lord uses family members for an example here is because they are closest to you and have the greatest influence on your decision making. Those that live far from you or who may not even know you have little to no influence on you so they could not cause division or hurts or effect you willingness to obey. But family can and often do hinder a believers walk with the Lord. For this reason the Lord says that if you love them more than me and allow them to influence your obedience to me in such a way that is not in my purpose you are not worthy of me. People may speak evil of you behind your back but you must go forward. The Lord’s glory is our ultimate goal. Come hell or high water we are to obey that which we know the Lord has called us to. It is a good and righteous thing to seek counsel from family and leadership. But when you know that you have your mandate from the Lord Jesus, it is He to whom your will must bend the knee. But take courage in this time!!!! You have a precious promise from on high: "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you" (Matt 5: 11,12). The Lord is watching and He loves those that obey Him. Your are not promised an easy road here. Your promises in heaven are better than could ever be fulfilled here on earth. The Lord says "great is your reward in heaven" where what you have can not and will not perish.

The objective of what the Lord is saying to us is to wake us up. The end draws ever nearer. Now is not the time for laughing like drunkards. Now is the time for sobriety (I Peter 1:13, I Peter 4:7, I Peter 5:8) because "the end of all things is at hand." The Lord would exhort you to "...be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless" (II Peter 3:14").

It is the Lord’s will and desire that we all be used in this next great and mighty work to be done. He wants us to use and move in our giftings and callings mightily. But He would say to you and me this day; do not defile yourself with the meat and wine of the prince of this world. Let us hear Daniel 1:8: "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank...". Amen.

A.W. Tozer once said:" I want the prophetic spirit on me or I want to die". Oh Lord help us to be able to say this.
